Scytale

Scytale was started in 2017 by seasoned engineers from Amazon Web Services, Google, Okta, PagerDuty, Splunk, and Duo Security who want to help enterprise engineers securely and easily build identity-driven, large-scale distributed software systems

Role & Project Summary

  • Scytale Enterprise: Dashboard

  • Main product dashboard experience for Scytale Enterprise
  • We need a homepage/dashboard that easily shows the users all the information they need to see to add, edit and maintain their identities associated with the Scytale Enterprise product
  • Users will be able to gain access to everything they need to work with Scytale enterprise from this dashboard

Project Constraints

  • The idea of the dashboard layout, look and feel really came from a talk with our front end engineer. He really wanted to use material design for its ease of implementation as we were working on tight deadlines to our launch date. So, to a large degree working with the design patterns in that framework, some of the ideas of our cards and other design elements came forward.

  • Data must be visible and make sense at a scannable level
  • All functionality should be able to be accessed from this page
  • We believe a well built dashboard will make the product easier to use and therefore more adoptable
  • The dashboard was one of the first - and last - things I designed, as it was constantly changing as we were adding features and getting clarity on what our product offering would be.
  • It started out with the idea that our front end engineer was planning on using material design to implement the entire design because we were on a tight deadline, so the idea of cards and other notions were built into that.
  • However the data on the cards and how the cards were presented continued to morph until the final feature was added, then we went back and cleaned up the ideas into a fully cohesive dashboard concept.

Guiding Questions

  • Why was it useful to do this?
  • What kind of wireframes did you make?
  • Low fidelity or high fidelity?
  • What tool did you use for this?
  • Did you use them for testing?
  • How many iterations did you have?

Summary

  • There is no specific goals for this feature. More so we built goals for the entire product launch. This includes how many active customers we would get within a certain timeline (which is not disclosable information)
  • While automating a lot of the setup happens on the command line, we decided to keep that there because of the time investment to bring that into the UI would have lengthened or date to launch by months.
  • Instead we focused on building more of the creation and maintenance part into the UI with the understanding that the setup and admin may be addressed in future releases
  • We started with what you see in the visuals here, but with the idea of leaving enough room on the cards for more information, and in each section having the ability to add pagination and search as things needed to be scaled to larger amounts of data
  • This full product was launched 19 June 2019
